Megan joined the Des Moines Area Community College Carroll Campus as a member of the Custodial staff in December 2015. She previously worked at New Hope Village as a custodian, and also had her own cleaning business on the side. Megan enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 children. Family life keeps her on her toes! She enjoys taking her dog on walks, traveling, and loves doing remodeling projects to their home with her husband.
Accounting and Business Administration
Rebecca Brown joined the faculty of Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll in 2001. Currently she is full-time instructor for accounting and business courses. Both classroom and online, she enjoys various teaching options. a graduate of Bellevue University with an MBA in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting, she is also a Certified Management Accountant. Rebecca has a variety of accounting experience in public, private and not-for profit entities. Her hobbies include hiking, biking, sewing and visiting family and friends when she's not in class or the office.
Business Technology - Lab Coordinator
Amy has a B.A in Elementary Education through the DMACC/UNI 2+2 Program (2003). She previously worked in the Human Resources department at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. Amy enjoys spending time with her family, especially her two children, reading, sports and canoeing the Raccoon River when she has time.
Lisa Dreesman joined Des Moines Area Community College in August 2008 as the Library-Media Specialist. Lisa has always worked in libraries, from the time she was a student assistant in her hometown public library and when she was an undergraduate student at UNI, where she worked in the Reserved Materials Department at the Rod Library. She began her teaching career at Plainfield Community School in Plainfield, Iowa, where she was the K-12 library-media specialist, 7th grade social studies teacher, assistant varsity girls basketball coach, and junior high girls track coach. In 1989, she was hired by the Carroll Community School District, where she was the grades 4-8 library media specialist. Lisa received her B.A. degree in History Education and her Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Northern Iowa. Away from work, Lisa enjoys traveling, walking her dog, reading, scrapbooking, and cheering on the New York Yankees.
Academic Advisor and Adjunct Faculty
Many students at Des Moines Area Community College's Carroll Campus are getting a guiding hand from Val Enenbach when deciding on coursework and their career path. Val has been an academic advisor at the Carroll Campus since 2002. In addition, Val is an adjunct DMACC faculty member who teaches coaching theory and athletic training courses. Before joining DMACC's staff, Val was the Director of Aquatics at LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, where she taught Water Safety Instruction, Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR, water aerobics and various physical education activity classes for both the college and community residents. She also was the head men's and women's swimming coach for LaGrange College. Val also was on Iowa Wesleyan College's faculty for four years as a physical education instructor, head volleyball coach and head softball coach.
Val is a graduate of Briar Cliff College and the United States Sports Academy. She has also completed graduate work at the University of Northern Iowa.
Academic Achievement Center, Math & Science Instructor
Kim Fara leads the programs and services at the Academic Achievement Center on Des Moines Area Community College's Carroll Campus. Since joining the staff in 1991, Kim has led DMACC's high school diploma program, Adult Literacy and provided academic support to students in Carroll. Previously she taught middle school science and math at St. Joseph's School in Earling, Iowa. Kim earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and her Master's degree from Drake University, and Ph.D. at Iowa State University.
Dr. Karen Friedlein
Dr. Karen Friedlein teaches Environmental Conservation, Environmental Conservation Lab, Human Biology, Health Science Microbiology, Health Science Anatomy and Health Science Physiology courses on the Carroll Campus.
Denise Higgins, RN, MSN
Denise Higgins is a full-time nursing instructor at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll since fall of 2007. Before joining the DMACC staff, Denise was a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, and St. Anthony Hospital, where she still works relief in ER, the ENT Specialty Clinic and New Hope Village in Carroll. She also served as an adjunct clinical instructor at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge and DMACC in Carroll for over 12 years. Denise earned her Associates Degree of Nursing from Iowa Central Community College, a Bachelor of Science of Nursing from the University of Iowa and is working on a MSN degree from Clarkson College in Omaha. In her free time, Denise enjoys travelling, reading, walking, going to sports events, and most of all spending time with her family and friends.
Connie earned her A.S. Degree through DMACC and undergraduate in management and Marketing through the Carroll BVU Graduate & Professional Program in 2011 while working at the bookstore part-time. Connie has extensive retail and marketing experience before becoming the bookstore manager in July of 2011. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, the outdoors, running and reading.
Chemistry and Physics
Nadine Jessen joined the Des Moines Area Community College faculty in the fall of 2008 after teaching as an adjunct for the Carroll Campus since 2004. Nadine lives in Audubon, Iowa and has spent the last 13 years teaching science at the Audubon High School. She also taught science for 2 years at the Cumberland-Massena Jr/Sr High School. Nadine earned her BA and Master's degrees from Buena Vista University. Nadine has been named in Who's Who Among American Teachers several times and has National Board Certification. In her spare time, Nadine enjoys reading and spending time with her family.
Julie joined the Des Moines Area Community College as an academic advisor for the Carroll Campus in January of 2017. Julie did her undergraduate work at the University of Iowa. She has been working in higher education since 2010 when she joined the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Iowa. Prior to starting with DMACC, she was an academic advisor for Buena Vista University at the Carroll DMACC location. In her spare time, Julie enjoys photography and spending time with her husband and young two children.
Amber Mahrt RN, MSN
Amber is a native of Denison, Iowa. She is a RN with background experience in critical care, cardiology, med/surg, ER, PACU, OB, and education. Amber graduated in 1996 from the University of Iowa, College of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. She completed my Master of Science in Nursing Education (MSN) in 2010 from Clarkson College in Omaha. She is a wife and mother and lives in Denison with her husband and three very active children, ages 14, 10, and 7. She volunteers for a number of groups, primarily the Imagination Station Daycare and the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa. Amber enjoys traveling, golfing, scrapbooking, playing with her kids, walking, and gardening. She and her husband also restore old homes as a hobby.
John joined the DMACC Carroll Campus in the fall of 2008 as the English and Speech instructor. He earned a B.A. in Religion from the University of Indianapolis, an M.A. in English from Ball State University and advanced coursework in Speech Communications from Southern Illinois University. John previously worked in the Interpersonal Communications Department at Bowling Green University and in the Dramatic Arts and Speech Communications Department at Central Michigan University. John enjoys reading, particularly Native American literature, Western American literature, children's literature, rhetoric, communication theory and theology. He also enjoys walking and performing in dramas.
Student Services Specialist
Cindy joined the staff at the Carroll Campus in July, 2010 having previously worked at New Opportunities and Carroll High School. She has extensive experience working with the public and enjoys the day to day contact with students and the public. Cindy keeps busy on an acreage with her husband. She has two married sons, as well as two married step-children and seven grandchildren. She enjoys traveling, the outdoors, baking, motorcycle riding, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
UNI/DMACC 2+2 Program Faculty & Coordinator
Marc Renning has been the UNI/DMACC 2+2 Coordinator and faculty member since August of 2007. Marc teaches classes and oversees the UNI/DMACC 2+2 program for the Carroll, Boone and Ankeny campuses. In addition, he supervises the field experiences associated with the 2+2 programs. Marc began his career in education teaching 4th grade at Adams Elementary in Carroll for 10 years, and he was the Center Director and Education Coordinator for Buena Vista University in Denison from 2003 - 2007. Marc earned a Bachelor's degree in K-12 PE and Health from Buena Vista College, an Elementary Education Endorsement from Wartburg College and a Master's of Education Administration from Buena Vista University. In his free time, Marc enjoys coaching his children's sports teams, participating in sports, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.
Since 1999 Tim Rial has been part of the Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll, teaching a variety of math courses. His courses include Calculus, Statistics, Finite Math, Algebra and Math for Elementary Teachers. Prior to joining DMACC's staff, Tim was a faculty member at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. Tim received his undergraduate and Master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa, and also has completed some coursework toward his doctorate at the University of Illinois, where he was a teaching assistant. While at UNI, he was a receiver on the football team, and a teammate of National Football League quarterback and Super Bowl most valuable player Kurt Warner. Away from the classroom, Tim enjoys time with his family including four children, along with playing golf, fishing, playing football and softball.
Since 2004, Jane Riley has been helping students with their library needs as the library assistant at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. Along with helping students to find resources, Jane's job consists of circulation duties, maintaining periodical databases and other library materials. She is also the college's ICN coordinator. Jane graduated from DMACC in Carroll with an associate's degree. In her spare time, Jane enjoys golfing and reading.
Christy Schettler is the Administrative Assistant to the Provost at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll joining the college in 2006. Originally from Alabama, she earned her associate's degree in business from DMACC & BA in Human Resources from Southern Columbia. Away from work, Christy enjoys time with her husband, 3 daughters, 2 grandsons & leading a Girl Scout Troop of 30 girls.
Building and Grounds Maintenance
Gary joined the DMACC Carroll Campus custodial staff during the summer of 2009 to oversee the building and grounds maintenance of the campus. Gary has an Associates Degree in Electro Mechanical Technology. In addition to keeping the campus grounds beautiful, Gary maintains all of the systems throughout the building to keep every part of the building functioning and in good repair. After working a full day at DMACC, Gary spends several hours coaching football and wrestling at the Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll. Gary also enjoys spending time with his four children, following them in sports, and going hunting and fishing when time allows. In his spare time, Gary works around his home in Mt. Carmel.
Renee Schon leads the Student Services-Iowa New Choices program for Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll. Joining the staff in 1988, Renee oversees DMACC's program that works closely with area agencies to provide academic and financial aid counseling, career planning, child care and transportation assistance to single parents and displaced homemakers in the area. Prior to DMACC, Renee worked for social service agencies including being a case manager for developmentally disabled individuals at New Hope Village in Carroll. Renee has her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University. In her spare time, Renee enjoys running, golf and is busy with the activities of her four children.
Business Administration Instructor
Jen Schulte is a Business Administration instructor for DMACC Carroll Campus. She returned to DMACC in August 2013, as she once managed the DMACC Carroll bookstore from 2007-2011. Jen possesses a MBA with a concentration in human Capital Management from Bellevue University and BA from Iowa State University in Communication Studies and Minor in Entrepreneurial Studies. Her Prior experience includes working a Promise Jobs Employment Specialist and WIA Youth Career Counselor at Iowa WORKS, Placement Consultant Westaff (a recruiting agency) and Assistant manager at Pier 1 Imports. Her hobbies and interest includes biking, kayaking, travel reading and spending time with family and friends. The type of courses Jen teaches includes human Relations, Management, Small Business Management, Marketing, Introduction to business, Personal Finance and International Business.
Lindsay joined the DMACC Carroll campus in the fall of 2013 as the English faculty hire. She earned her B.A. in English from the University of Tennessee and her M.A. in English from Virginia Tech. Lindsay previously worked in the English Department at Virginia Tech, taught international and graduate students at the VT Language and culture institute, and worked with Composition students at DMACC (Boone/Ankeny campuses). She enjoys writing, reading, cooking and foraging for fruit with her family.
Mike Stout joined the Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll in 2002 as the Building Trades instructor. Before coming to DMACC, Mike worked for 20 years as a teacher in the Coon Rapids-Bayard Community School district and spent 30 years in the construction business with Hoops Construction. Mike earned his Bachelor's of Applied Sciences from Westmar College. In his free time, Mike enjoys hunting, fishing and playing with his grandchildren.
Bethany joined the DMACC Carroll campus in Fall 2015. She earned her B.A. in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Cornell University, her M.A. in U.S. History from the University of California, Irvine, and anticipates earning her Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in Winter 2017. She previously taught English and Literature at several DMACC campuses and Literature and History at the University of California. With her family, Bethany runs a statewide tutoring company that provides tutoring services to low-income K-12 students. She enjoys reading, walking, hiking, playing video games, and traveling in her spare time.
Technology Resourece Center
Jack Thompson is the coordinator and instructor for the Technology Resource Center at the Des Moines Area Community College campus in Carroll. Jack joined the faculty in 1999 and leads courses related to the Industrial Electro-Mechanical Technology program and laboratory courses associated with the DMACC and University of Northern Iowa 2 + 2 program. He also coordinates the center's shared program classes with up to 10 local area high schools, teaching basic electricity and other technology courses. Prior to joining DMACC's staff, Jack was a plant electrician with Polaris Industries in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He attended college at Southwest Technical College in Minnesota and South Dakota State University and currently is a student in the DMACC and UNI 2 + 2 program.
Tom Van Erdewyk
In September 2014, Tom Van Erdewyk, joined the Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll as a member of the Custodial staff. In 1984, Tom graduated from the Carpentry Program at Iowa Central Community College. Before coming to DMACC, Tom spent the previous 24 years working in the pressroom at the Daily Times Herald in Carroll, part of that time as pressroom manager. In his spare time he likes to spend time with his wife and children. He also enjoys golfing ,biking, remodeling his home in Carroll, doing some woodworking projects and watching sports. He also likes to help out and spend time with his extended family.
Campus Coordinator, Nursing Program
Jean Voege joined the Des Moines Area Community College as the Campus Coordinator for the Nursing program in August 2007. Jean received a Nursing diploma in 1981, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1984 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 1994.Jean has 13 years experience as a bedside nurse in adult critical care. She has taught at the community college level since 1994. In her spare time, Jean enjoys traveling.
Financial Aid, Student Accounts
Jan Weitl oversees the student Financial Aid and Student Accounts operations at Des Moines Area Community College's Carroll Campus. Since 1996 she has been counseling students about college tuition assistance, guiding them through the financial aid programs that are available and informing them about new scholarship offerings that can support their college education at DMACC.
Career Work Experience Instructor
Kris Soyer joins the DMACC Carroll campus in the fall of 2010 bringing her degrees in Business Education and Education in Counseling as well experiences in IKM-Manning High School Counseling to assist students in their pursuits. She enjoys reading, golfing and spending time with family and friends.
In August 2011, Jen began her employment with Des Moines Area Community College as the counselor for the Carroll Campus. She began her career in education by teaching high school math at Rockwell City/Lytton, then taught math at East Sac County High School and eventually became the school counselor there. Jen has also been a coach of many sports, but has coached high school girls track for over 15 years and still continues to coach track at East Sac County. Jen received her B.A. in Secondary Math Education from Wayne State College, an M.A. in Technology Based Learning from Morningside College, and an M.A. in Secondary School Counseling from Buena Vista University. She enjoys spending time with her family (husband and their three daughters) and friends, the outdoors, traveling, and photography.
