Des Moines Area Community College has the distinction of enrolling the most culturally diverse student population in the Iowa higher education system. Our responsibility to our students, and to the staff and faculty that serve them, is articulated in the diversity vision statement:
DMACC will create a culture in which all people are valued and supported, and will celebrate the similarities and differences among us. In doing so, we will prepare the DMACC community to live, to learn, and to work together in a global society.
DMACC is committed to meeting the needs of our increasingly diverse district. That commitment is fostered at many different levels of the institution. Our Diversity Commission will serve as the institutional leader in the coordination of all of our efforts to create opportunities for citizens from different cultures and with different life experiences to experience DMACC, as a student, a professor or staff member.
Iowa is at a critical juncture today—economically and culturally. We have one of the slowest growth rates in the nation, one of the oldest and homogeneous populations, and we are near the bottom of the state rankings in the number of high school graduates each year. Despite these statistics, the economic climate in Iowa, and particularly in Central Iowa, is very good.
State and local leaders are working to identify strategies to find the new workers required to fuel this economic expansion. Iowa needs to tap its under-utilized workers—the newest wave of immigrants settling in Iowa, the under-employed, older workers, individuals with disabilities, and others—and provide them with the skills needed to fill these jobs of the future. In central Iowa, DMACC is uniquely poised to provide education and skill training to all of our citizens that want to attend college and go to work.
At this website, you will find information about DMACC's Diversity Commission, our action projects to increase the diversity of our student and staff population, and the activities and programs offered at the different campuses designed to help every person feel welcome here. We are committed to providing assistance to the employers in our district as they work to hire a well-trained workforce that is reflective of the changing demographics in our communities.
