The AAC offers pre-high school level instruction at NO COST to students in basic skills areas of reading, writing, math, general science, and social studies. The faculty uses a "scaffolding" approach to basic education skill improvement. Skill levels are assessed and appropriate materials are selected. The materials used are serial in nature, and advanced levels make use of the foundations built at lower levels.
To enroll, a student must be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in other schools. Since the classes are open-entry and open-exit, students may enroll at any time during the regular college calendar. Instruction is given on a one-to-one basis, and students learn at their own speed. Each year, over five hundred people enroll in ABE at Urban Des Moines AAC to improve their skills in reading, writing, math, and life skills. A majority move on to GED study.
